Q Our diet and our digestive system: In this chapter you will be learning how your digestive system works, to help you digest and absorb nutrients and excrete those substances you did not absorb. As you embark on this nutrition, many of you have mentioned that you want to learn how you can use your diet to prevent illness. The first step starts with what you eat. Developing a "healthy" diet can be challenging for so many reasons (as discussed in discussion board 2), but it is important to understand what constitutes a "healthy" diet. I want you to start thinking about how to feed your gut, so your gut can continue to protect you from the outside world. What to do: Read NPR's article "Diet Hit A Snag? Your Gut Bacteria May Be Partly To Blame (Links to an external site.)," and watch two videos posted below. Video 1: Microbiome: We are what they eat (6 min). Video 2: Bowel Wars: Hydrogen Sulfide vs Butyrate (4 min). Useful Canvas Help pages on, How do I reply to a discussion as a student? (Links to an external site.) In your initial post, answer the following questions (number your responses based on the questions); 1. What specific information in Chapter 3 did you find interesting? Was there something unclear in Chapter 3 that you want to ask a question about? 2. Explain how the information in the videos provide insight toward your current diet, the "healthiness" of your gut or your overall ability to stay healthy? How do these video complement (or not) the information in Chapter 3)? 3. Do you think you have good symbiosis or bad dysbiosis? Support your response based your iProfile reports (current diet). Discussion Directions: In your initial post, conclude your post by signing your name. When you reply to your classmates, please type the name of the classmate you are responding to, type your thoughtful message to that person, and type your name at the bottom of the message. Make sure to use proper grammar, capitalization, (I instead of i) and punctuation in this college level course in all correspondence. Please avoid “text” or “twitter speak” when corresponding. Summary: *Your classmates responses will not be visible to you until you have submitted your own initial post. Grading and Rubric: This assignment is worth 20 points. Grading will be based on well developed, thoughtful, timely responses, related to nutrition and asking related questions to help with clarifications. Please note, if viewing the course via the Canvas mobile app the rubric does not appear on this page.

1. What I found interesting was how fast the human body is able to break down foods in the digestive system and have it absorbed into the cells with the cardiovascular system. Reading through the book made it seem like it is a long process for our organs to perform their work, for example, food substance must be moistened by saliva in order to swallow, then goes to pharynx, then goes to esophagus, but right before it enters the stomach, must pass through a sphincter, after food has reached the stomach it is now being liquefied with the help of gastric juice and chyme, the absorption of nutrients happens in the small intestines, and whatever is not absorbable is turned into feces in which our body's then eliminate.
